Some people are just born with talent.

I recall my sister, at a very young age, finding beauty in wildflowers - buttercups, vinca, thistle, and Queen Anne’s lace and making arrangements. Growing on the sides of roads or in the woods as common flowers, she would pick them, bring them home, and arrange them so beautifully in jars and vases that that they became works of art.

She had an “eye” as they say and would bring these former weeds-turned-stunning flower arrangements to neighbors. Was there any doubt she would become a florist, beginning her lifelong profession at a local shop as an intern in 8th grade?

Her business has long been sold. But she hasn’t really retired. When you find joy in your work and creating art is in your blood, it continues on as a hobby.

Design by Lisa might seem like a new venture with an expansion into resin-based items like her sun catcher and framed nautical scenes. She’s now designing Christmas trees of beach glass, shells, and old-fashioned costume jewelry. She’s going to craft fairs now instead of selling her wares in a shop. New items. New venue. But not a new venture for her.

She’s still creating works of art from everyday, common items. She’s still creating stunning flower arrangements, door wreaths, and even fairy homes using high quality silk flowers. She’s still honing her skills and giving the world beauty to see. 

Researchers from Harvard say that hobbies such as arts and crafts that involve creativity, sensory engagement, self-expression, relaxation, and cognitive stimulation are linked to good mental health and well-being. Creating art is good for the person creating it. 

Likewise, viewing art that others have created is also beneficial to the person viewing it. Studies show that when a person looks at a piece of art that they see as beautiful, there is an instantaneous release of dopamine, a chemical that is linked to feelings of love, into the brain.

My sister is proof that having hobbies and interests after retirement bring joy - to oneself and to others when shared. 

Her creations are absolutely beautiful and unique. When she displays her wares at craft shows, she draws a crowd. I particularly love the Christmas trees she creates with jewelry. You may have costume jewelry that you never wear or have inherited from long lost family members. Instead of throwing it away, why not have it made into a Christmas tree? What a great way to honor and remember a loved one.
